Shrewsbury has always been one of the great schools of England, ever since its royal foundation in 1552 by King Edward VI, and it was recognised as one of the leading independent schools by the Clarendon Commission in the last century. Many of its old boys - Sir Philip Sidney and Charles Darwin, for example, and in current times Sir Martin Rees, President of the Royal Society and Astronomer Royal - have achieved great fame. Shrewsbury continues to attract pupils of great potential and capable of great achievements.

Each year Shrewsbury currently admits about 120 boys into the First Year (Third Form) at the age of 13; a handful more join our Fourth Form a year later, at the start of the two-year GCSE course. Our co-educational Sixth Form attracts pupils from a variety of other schools, and our intake at this level comprises about 25 boys and 50 girls.

In September 2014, Shrewsbury will start taking girls as well as boys into the Third Form.  Please see our announcement Governors endorse 2020 Development Plan towards full co-education for more information.
