Food at Shrewsbury
Meals at Shrewsbury are taken in our purpose-built catering hall, Kingsland Hall, where pupils choose from a wide variety of foods from our self-service counters and then eat with their friends and tutors from their house.
Almost all of our food is cooked from scratch, using fresh ingredients and local suppliers wherever possible. We happily cater for pupils with special dietary needs such as dairy/lactose intolerance, gluten-free diets and halal food.
Shropshire County Council gave our service a 'Platinum' rating in their Healthy Food Awards in 2011, which backs up Ofsted's 'Outstanding' rating of our healthcare provision; in their 2010 report, Ofsted stated: "The healthy diet of pupils is promoted by the school's commitment to providing an outstanding catering provision. This is delivered by a team of enthusiastic contracted staff. Pupils express real satisfaction with the quality of breakfast and lunchtime meals. All foods are locally sourced and used to produce nutritious and enticing meals. Pupils' cultural, religious and health needs are being fully met through the wide-ranging choice of meals on offer."
We have a four-week rolling menu that changes each term, and although this can occasionally be subject to some variation, the general format remains the same.
In July 2011, we changed our contract catering company to Holroyd Howe Independent, an award-winning catering company that specialises in the education sector. Since that time, a number of improvements and changes have taken place, both to the food and menus on offer, and to the layout and furnishings of the hall.
Breakfast
A continental and a full cooked breakfast is on offer on all teaching days, and a continental breakfast on Sundays.
Lunch
On all teaching days, lunch options include two hot meat choices, a vegetarian choice, soup and bread, a salad bar, a fresh fruit and yoghurt bar and a hot pudding. In addition, two theatre-style deli-bars within the dining area itself offer different options – oriental noodles, panninis etc. – on different days of the week.
On Sundays, the ever-popular brunch is on offer between 10.45am and 1pm.
Supper
The format for supper is similar to that of lunch, but without the deli-bars, and on Sundays we offer a traditional roast meal.
Our Catering Manager, Amanda Francis, welcomes the opportunity to talk both to parents and pupils about any special dietary needs or concerns that they may have. She can be contacted on 01743 280841 afrancis@shrewsbury.org.uk.
