History

More detail can be found about all of our academic faculties under the Curriculum sections of our website that cover the Third Form Curriculum, the Fourth Form Curriculum (leading up to GCSE) and the Sixth Form Curriculum.

We believe that History is a civilizing discipline, and should be an essential part of any well-stocked mind. It is a liberal art based on the study of people in the past, as individuals, groups and institutions; the medium employed is evidence, analysis and interpretation. Central to the subject are reading and discussion. Reasoned comment on matters of the day, various judgements, moral decisions, cultural assessments - all depend on adequate historical knowledge. History is a literary subject, and the skills acquired useful for a number of vocations.

At Shrewsbury we offer 20th century history to the junior years plus a synoptic course on British history for the first year; then a choice of 19th century or 16/17th centuries to the Sixth Form. Having no common core enables us to range widely and also introduce new units - for example, American history.

The department particularly encourages links with the Art Department and has worked with them on talks, seminars and visits - in past years to Paris and Italy. We have also taken junior trips to the First War battlefields and Berlin. Students are encouraged to enter History Prize competitions, such as the Vellacott (run by Peterhouse, Cambridge) for the LVI year; and the Julia Wood prize essay (run by St. Hugh's College, Oxford) for both LVI and UVI History candidates.

The Shropshire Historical Association
