OS Careers Advice
Old Salopians can be found in a wide variety of professions, both in the UK and abroad. Many of them are more than willing to help younger alumni with their careers. This can take the form of mentoring, talks at the School, offers of work experience or internships or general advice and support for Old Salopians as they build their careers.
There are several ways to get involved in this at any level:
Headlines
For some time, the Old Salopian office has offered a service known as 'Headlines'. This is an e-list of about 260 Old Salopians in business and the professions who have opted-in to receive requests for help from Old Salopians looking for opportunities, advice or support. When a request is received, an email is sent to all subscribers and we advise people only to respond if they can offer a response to specific request, otherwise to delete the email. If you would like to participate in 'Headlines', or if you have a request, please email Miriam Walton in the office, with the word 'Headlines' in the subject. You can also obtain the latest bulletin by emailing Miriam.
The Old Salopian Database
Business details for Old Salopians are held on the database where they have been supplied. We encourage all Old Salopians to keep this up to date by contacting the office. Data Protection rules apply and we only share data if people have opted to do this. If you have not already done so, you can opt-in to sharing your contact details with other Old Salopians by contacting the office.
LindkedIn
There are about 100 Old Salopians in the Old Salopian LinkedIn group. This is a primarily job and career-related networking service (rather than a primarily social group like Facebook) and you will need to join LinkedIn and set up a profile.
There is now a large (and growing) Old Salopian Facebook Group. If you are a Facebook user already, just ask to join, otherwise you will be invited to set up a free Facebook account.
Advice for people looking for work
A 'headliner' has sent this sage advice for those currently seeking to change career or thinking of re-training:
'My advice to students is to enter the workforce as interns (even unpaid if its a good position) in their field of interest. This may delay graduation but will help them establish contacts and show prospective employers their abilities. Their internships could also guide their choices in university, honing the skills employers want. I recommend this article as a starting point.'
