  • 'Non-rower', Dan Howie, to enter the Toughest Rowing Race on Earth

Dan Howie (Ch 1998 - 03) - pictured left on the photograph - who never rowed at Shrewsbury or indeed ever until earlier this month, has entered for the toughest rowing race on Earth.  As one of a 2-man crew, along with his rowing partner, Will North, Dan hopes to successfully compete in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, 2013..  The race will start in December 2013 on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands and will finish approximately 3,000 miles away in English Harbour, Antigua an estimated 40 – 70 days later. Dan is aiming to raise £100,000 for three charities; Cancer Research UK, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and St Anna’s.

It is one of the ultimate tests of endurance which will require the two men to take approximately 720 two-hour shifts on the oars, a total of 1440 hours, facing 40ft waves, attention from sharks, shipping lanes and extreme temperatures.

A challenge like this is an expensive undertaking (an estimated £80,000 will be needed to fund the campaign) and therefore Dan is currently seeking corporate sponsorship to enable him to get to the start line. If your business, or the company you are employed by are interesting in being a part of this campaign in some way, then please contact Dan on 07793 970 598 or email atlanticrow2013@gmail.com. He would be delighted to hear from you.

  • Old Salopian designer makes good use of time!

Andrew Jennings (I 1998-03), Chairman of the recently revived Old Salopian Rugby Club, has been turning his life-long interest in vintage watches to good use.   In partnership with a Swedish friend, Joakim Larsson whom he met on a skiing trip when still a student, he has launched a specialist watch design company called Larsson and Jennings.

Andrew (pictured, right) has managed to achieve this while holding down his day job as an investment manager.  His entrepreneurial flair was already in evidence while he was at Shrewsbury:  His contemporaries will doubtless remember that he ran an eBay business, buying and selling mobile phones.  Andrew is also using the internet, including social networking sites, to good effect in developing his new project.

Andrew says: ' I have always been particularly fond of vintage watches and I think this shows through with our design.  The process was a lengthy one with Joakim and myself negotiating and developing every design feature. He wanted to make it as minimalistic as possible whilst I wanted to show my particular love of vintage watches - hence our catch phrase "British heritage with Swedish minimalistic style".  We think the watches look great when worn with more formal attire and wouldn't look out of place accompanying a suit.

  • Press coverage: Mail on OS Jimmy Taylor's determination to support Alex Wilson's family foundation

Jimmy Taylor in The MailCaptain of the England Lions team, Jimmy Taylor (R 2003-2008), is featured in The Mail in a moving article about his friendship with Alex Wilson who died so tragically in his first year at St. Andrew's. Jimmy returned to The Schools earlier this term for a fundraising football match in Alex's memory to watch the match and draw the winning raffle ticket.  The Mail Online: James-Taylor-determined-make-Alex-Wilson.

Since the inaugural football match last November, the Shrewsbury School Foundation has been working with the Wilson Family to raise sufficient funds to create an athletic bursary in the name of Alex Wilson. The appeal targets donations from a variety of events including an annual football match and reception. All funds raised are matched by generous support from the Kruth family. If you would like to support this effort please contact the Shrewsbury School Foundation at foundation@shrewsbury.org.uk.

This year's football match and reception is scheduled for the 23rd of September 2012 at Shrewsbury School.

  • Memories sought by Old Salopian author for book about Liverpool Ramblers

Jonathan Russell (O 1959-64) is asking for any Old Salopian with memories of playing against Liverpool Ramblers to get in touch with him about his forthcoming book on the history of the Liverpool Ramblers:

‘I am writing a book on the history of the Liverpool Ramblers, probably the world’s oldest amateur football club in existence which has never played in a league. Founded in 1882 (by amongst others, Bruce Ismay of ‘Titanic’ notoriety), it did play in the FA Cup for three years before professionalism. The club began before the Corinthians, was the first to test out John Brodie’s goal nets in 1890 prior to their use being sanctioned by the FA, appeared in probably the first European Cup Final in 1907 and undertook the first ever football tour to Ireland.

Liverpool Ramblers played Shrewsbury in its first season which the school lost 4-1 in March 1883. For as long as anyone can remember up to five teams have come down to Shrewsbury every September with an early rendezvous at The Boathouse. Last season was no exception as this photo of 55 Liverpool Ramblers shows, proving the popularity of this annual fixture and the close connection with the school.

Most Salopians who have played in a school football team will probably recall playing against the dark blue and gold halved shirts of the Ramblers. Since 1945 the membership has been dominated by Old Salopians who have heavily contributed to the Club’s colourful history both on and off the pitch.

The School’s football masters have starred at the Ramblers Easter Festival. Robin Moulsdale brought the Shrewsbury Moles to the Ramblers Easter Festival and Robin Trimby scored a record number of goals which has not been surpassed. Mark Dickson played many times in goal for a Barry Burns XI.

I would very much like to hear from any Old Salopian who has memories of playing against the Liverpool Ramblers at school or for the Club at any time. Any photos would be a bonus. Please contact Jonathan Russell at jhrussell@umbria.eclipse.co.uk. The book will be published during the Autumn.’

  • The Old Salopian Office View - 1st May 2012

This is the text of the latest e-newsletter from The Salopian Club Director, Alex Baxter:

    Dear Old Salopian,

The start of the cricket season at Shrewsbury coincided with the wettest April in Shropshire in recent years thus little action has taken place on top common.  The damp weather has had less of an impact on the Old Salopian social calendar however, with two successful events being held in recent weeks.  Over 100 young Old Salopians attended a party at the Bunga Bunga nightclub in Battersea on Sat 21st April, while a smaller group of 42 Old Salopians and guests attended a more formal black tie dinner at the St Paul’s Club in Birmingham.  Reports on both events appear on the Club website:  http://www.shrewsbury.org.uk/page/os-news

    Old Salopian Careers
Following on from the previous e-bulletin, there has been another super response from Old Salopians and parents who work in the legal profession with many offers to come to talk at the Schools on 26th June.  We will be firming up the details for this event over the next few days and will write to all who have been in contact on this topic.  As a follow-up to the successful medical talk and dinner in March, the Office contacted all medical professionals with an e-mail address, with a view to forming an OS Medical Society.  Again, we received a very positive response from OS and parents, with many offers of assistance with future talks at the Schools, professional advice, mentoring and work experience.

    Old Salopian Sport

    Football
Rarely out of the headlines this season, the OS 2nd XI has capped a terrific run of 9 consecutive victories to earn promotion to Division 2 of the Arthurian League.  This is certain to ensure lively celebrations at the forthcoming OSFC annual dinner on 17th May!  Many congratulations to the team.  The OSFC website can be accessed via the following link:  http://www.oldsalopianfc.com/default.aspx

Alex Wilson Foundation – Football Match
The squally conditions on Easter Sunday afternoon did not dampen the spirits of the crowd that witnessed the class of 2008 (in Barcelona colours) take on the mighty class of 2009 (garbed in Real Madrid kit).  An entertaining football match ensued with the latter side winning by 2 goals to 1.  The event was organised by Hugo Tapp (PH 2003-08), James Trelawny (G 2004-09) and Henry Wilson (brother of Alex Wilson).  The event raised the sum of £1500 towards the Alex Wilson Foundation.  The organisers wished us to extend a big thank you to the 150+ spectators that turned out, despite the damp conditions and also to the Butter Market nightclub for its generous contribution to the eventual total, secured by Jimmy Wallace (PH 2003-08).

    Fencing
After almost 40 years’ association with the Schools, Ken Holding, the fencing coach will retire in the summer.  To mark Ken’s departure, current Salopian Chris Williams and George Lane Fox (Rt 2005-10) are trying to raise money for a gift to ensure that Ken goes out in style.  They are also hoping to arrange a fencing match between Old Salopians and the School, on Speech Day, 7th July and would like to mark the occasion with a presentation to Ken.  George has set-up a Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/groups/370713092967850/ to promote the event.  If you are interested in making a donation, Chris Williams can be contacted at chriswilliams14.williams@gmail.com.

  • Inaugural 'Young OS' event a fantastic success

On Saturday 21st April, The Salopian Club held its first Young OS event at Bunga Bunga in London. The event was a fantastic success with about 100 old boys and girls venturing down to Battersea’s number one late night venue.

The evening kicked off with a free glass of champagne for all our guests and it wasn’t long until the party was in full flow, and there were certainly a few things to celebrate, including a recent engagement, and of course the recent promotion of the 2nd XI OS football team.

The brilliant turnout also enabled us to donate some money to the charity Help For Heroes by sponsoring OS, Kit Schutzer-Weissmann, who this summer is attempting to cycle from London to Istanbul. A fantastic challenge and one we are proud to support. If you would like to sponsor Kit please visit the following website: http://www.justgiving.com/KitSchutzer-Weissmann.

With a good mix of ages at the event, ranging from recent leavers to those who haven’t graced the Shrewsbury School site for over 10 years, it seems there is plenty of opportunity for many more Young OS events to come, and we look forward to revealing details of the next get together with you all shortly.

    Floreat Salopia.

  • Birmingham Dinner - 26 April

The annual Birmingham Dinner, hosted by Richard Woodgate and organised by the Birmingham and West Midlands Branch, proved to be a lively and celebratory affair amidst the comfortable confines of the St Paul’s Club.  Forty-two guests enjoyed a sumptuous five-course meal, served with fine wines and port and were royally entertained by the excellent saxophone quartet from Shrewsbury School.  Special guests included the Headmaster, the current President of the Salopian Club Peter Worth (S 1965-70), as well as current and former masters from the Schools; Mr John Alford (Art), Mr Chris Conway (Careers) and Mr Will Hughes (Housemaster Ridgemount & G 1988-90).  Richard Woodgate (Rt 1954-59) and Mr Anthony Blakemore (St Paul’s Club) officiated.

Following the loyal toast, speeches were given by Peter Worth and the Headmaster.  In toasting the School’s health Peter Worth highlighted the Salopian Club’s efforts in developing effective careers support for Old Salopians of all ages, as well as the big challenge facing the Foundation to raise funds for the proposed development programmes at the Schools.  In responding the Headmaster, Mark Turner, reported the School to be in “rude health”, with numbers at their highest ever levels and competition for girls’ places in the 6th form being particularly fierce.  He explained that Shrewsbury’s 2020 Vision Plan, endorsed by the governors, recognised the need to compete with schools of similar ilk, including Rugby, Oundle and Radley hence the need to invest in new educational facilities and to improve existing infrastructure.  The Headmaster referred to the extended Shrewsbury family and the huge value the School places on its relationship with the Old Salopian community.  He thanked those present for their continued support for the Schools and encouraged as many Old Salopians as possible to attend the Old Salopian Day on 22nd September. • Alex Wilson Foundation Event – 8 April 2012

On a squally Easter Sunday afternoon Barcelona took on Real Madrid on the Astroturf pitch at the Schools.  The class of 2008 in Barcelona colours played the mighty class of 2009 disguised as Real Madrid.  The latter side ran out 2-1 winners in an entertaining game.

The event was organised through Hugo Tapp (PH 2003-08), James Trelawny (G 2004-09) and Henry Wilson (brother of Alex Wilson), to raise funds for the Alex Wilson Foundation.  Approximately 150 spectators showed up for the occasion and a whopping £1500 was raised through gate sales, a raffle and a donation from the Butter Market nightclub, via Jimmy Wallace (PH 2003-08).

There are a wide variety of fund raising activities for the Alex Wilson Foundation taking place later this year including:

21st July – John O Groats to Lands End cycle ride

Sept – Cycle ride to  and marathon in Munich

23rd Sept – Annual Alex Wilson memorial football match at the Schools.

  • Challenging Boat Race for OS Sabrina Umpire, John Garrett

The 2012 Boat Race will go down in history as one of the more difficult meetings to umpire.  John Garrett (Rt 1976-81), pictured L, umpiring the race for the 3rd time, is unlikely to forget this particular race.  With the aid of the eagle eyes of Sir Matthew Pinsent John was forced to call a halt when a protestor was spotted in the water close to the Oxford boat.

The race was eventually restarted at the halfway point and more controversy ensued following a clash of oars between the two crews, leaving Oxford with a broken oar.  Cambridge went on to win the race comfortably.  Afterwards John told the BBC “There was something in the water.  We thought it was debris, then we realised it was a swimmer.  It was clear he was waiting for the boats, so I had to stop the race."

Another Old Salopian involved in this year’s race was Jonathan Legard (O 1974-79), a sports reporter, who shared the coverage with the BBC’s Dan Topolski (a former Oxford rowing coach).

In the annual Varsity Fives Match that took place at Eton on 3rd March, Old Salopians were out in force.

In the Men's Blues match, 4 of the 12 players were Old Salopians - and the three playing for Oxford all won their matches!  In the Ladies Match, Old Salopian Alice Walker (MSH 2008-2010) captained the Ladies' Oxford team to victory in tremendous style!

  • Salopian Club: Medical Talk and Dinner

On the evening of 7th March the Salopian Club, in conjunction with the Careers Master and the School’s Medical Society, piloted the first Old Salopian careers talk and dinner.

On this occasion, we invited OS medics to Emma Darwin Hall, and 25 sixth formers heard inspirational talks by Dr Piers Dixey (O 1999-2004) and Dr Dan Morris (PH 1987-92).  Piers concentrated on life as a junior doctor on a stroke unit, while Dan presented the challenges of a busy ophthalmic specialist and wilderness medicine.  Also attending the talk and dinner were Dr Terry West (parent of 3 Shrewsbury educated doctors) and medical student George Jarvis (PH 2004-09).

Afterwards at dinner in the Peterson Room our sixth form prospective medics sat and talked with the professionals, gleaning all sorts of valuable ideas, anecdotes and perspectives. We very much hope that the success of this pilot event can be repeated every two years or so and that the network will continue to build, helping both current pupils and Old Salopians.

We hope to repeat this type of event on a regular basis, providing careers talks by Old Salopians from different disciplines and professional backgrounds.  Although Old Salopians have been coming back to the School for many years to give careers talks, the difference with this new programme is the format, which allows pupils and Old Salopians to mix freely after the event, and the follow-on activity by the Salopian Club in developing professional groupings that will help to mentor and advise pupils once they have left the School.

Sam and Kit on The Freedom ChallengeWithin a month of leaving Shrewsbury in 2010, Sam and his jazz band 'The Quarter' were playing at The Big Chill and then at Edinburgh Festival.

  • The Salopian Club Welcomes Two New Honorary Members

Last year, and just before he died,  Richard Raven (M 1945-5) recommended that the Club consider inviting two long-term supporters of Shrewsbury School and the Salopian Club - Ronald Williams and Geoffrey Clarke - to be Honorary Members.

Ronald (Ron) Williams (pictured in the middle between Nick Randall, left and David Gee, right) served the Shrewsbury School as a hard-working groundsman and gardener for over 25 years.  Ron's friendly greeting and ready smile was famous throughout the Site and there must be very few pupils or staff who have not been on the receiving end of his friendly banter at one time or another!

Geoffrey has been an avid supporter of Salopian cricket and football for the past 16 years or so.  In that time he has developed an encyclopaedic knowledge of those that have represented the School at 1st team level and has proven a useful guide to many a parent.

The new Hon Old Salopians were welcomed at a lunch arranged at Director,  Alex Baxter's home on Tuesday 28th February.  Club ties were presented to Geoffrey and Ron by the Club Chairman, Nick Randall (O 1972-76).   Also attending the lunch was Dr. David Gee, history master at Shrewsbury.

  • Football: OS Veterans triumph over School's A XI
A mixed 6th form team took on the OS Vets which included Jimmy Aston in goal and teachers Mr W Hughes, Mr N Sceery and Mr D Ithurbisque. The match was played out in a fantastic spirit and a very entertaining afternoon ended with a 5-3 victory for the Vets. A very good occasion all round.

Following last year’s drubbing at the hands of the School by 9 goals to nil, the Old Salopian Veterans team were seeking a modicum of revenge last Saturday, 3 March.  On a superbly prepared pitch and with decent weather, apart from a stiff north-westerly breeze, the conditions were set fair for a good game of football.  The sizeable crowd witnessed an entertaining and open end-to-end game.

In a tight first half the score was 2-all before the Vets hit a purple patch during which they seemed to score at will.  With well-taken goals either side of half-time, the Vets seemed to be dominating the game and at one stage were cruising at 5-2.  Nevertheless, the School side continued to attack at every opportunity, eventually scoring a consolation goal towards the end of the game.

The final score-line of 5-3 was probably a fair reflection although many of the vets side were relieved when the final whistle sounded.

A big thank you to Steve Biggins for organising the match and giving some of his younger players an outing against the Old Salopians, and also to the ground staff for preparing such an excellent playing surface.

  • Update on Old Salopian's work with Ugandan Street Children's Charity

Retired Cumbrian vicar, Christopher Jenkin (I 1950-55) and his wife Mary (pictured, right, with Mrs Margaret Sentamu, wife of the Archbishop of York) have sent us this update of their work with their Kasese Street Kids Charity for street children in Western Uganda:

    Hostel Opening

We have just received confirmation that the Street Kids Hostel is to be opened, and the children invited in, on
Saturday 24th March.  The Jenkins' are planning to be there.

Enos Kyibibi, the Project Director, is planning a day of “Sensitization Workshops” for local community leaders, church leaders, business people, and NGOs (non-government organizations), as a way of publicizing the work of SKILL to the local community. (SKILL is Street Kids Information and Learning for Life.)

    Building Progress

All the internal plumbing work is now completed and the project is preparing a final budget for the expensive job of providing concrete floors

Chris says: 'The money is waiting in UK banks until Alan gives us the OK to send it out. We take very seriously our responsibility to make sure that money donated is wisely spent on properly budgeted jobs!'

Fund raising activities have included a photographic Exhibition (pictured, left) in Holy Trinity Church, Kendal, in October-November, 2011.  Guest speaker at the preview was Margaret Sentamu who spoke on the theme, 'How Much is Enough?'. The photographer, Carol Allen Storey also attended and spoke passionately about her concern for the helpless and voiceless of Africa.  The exhibition attracted several donations and will also be displayed in Carlisle Cathedral during the last two weeks of March.  A raffle of patchwork also raised £1300.

  • Project Harar Ethiopa (PHE) Celebrates its 10th birthday with a Medical Mission to Ethiopia

In 2002, Jonathan Crown (M 1978-82) founded a charity called Project Harar Ethiopia.

Jonathan says, 'It only seems like yesterday that I came across two boys in the desert town of Harar in Eastern Ethiopia, both of whom had suffered dreadful injuries to their faces. One from Noma, a facial gangrene, the other had been attacked by Hyenas.

It was an epiphany for me, and I decided to do what I could to help them. Over the ensuing year, I managed to get them complex facial rebuilding surgery on a hospital ship the other side of Africa in the Gambia."

PHE was founded, and I have been building up ever since, we celebrated treating our 2,000th patient recently!'

Jonathan will shortly be leading PHE's latest venture:  a major two-week medical mission to Ethiopia.

This will comprise an expert team of 6, 2 surgeons, 2 anesthetists and 2 nurses, mainly from Guys Hospital in London who will be travelling to Addis Ababa in mid April. Head of surgery is Professor Mark McGurk www.salivary-gland.co.uk/  and http://www.baoms.org.uk/page.asp?id=503 who will be performing between 30 and 50 complex facial procedures on impoverished Ethiopians in mid April.

These patients suffer from various facial disfigurements, from Noma, animal attacks, cancers and tumours, burns and other facial trauma.

All costs will be covered by PHE.

Support Project Harar Ethiopia: visit http://www.projectharar.org and see how you can help change the lives of children in the poorest parts of rural Ethiopia.

  • RSSBC Umbrellas

The RSSBC have produced some wonderful Maltese Cross umbrellas, which are now on sale in our School Shop (see details below).  They are plain navy, with a white Maltese Cross on each quadrant, and a full colour Shrewsbury School Crest on a button on the handle.

The picture in the background of our umbrella poster is of the 1st V111 wining the final at Henley in 1980 beating Radley College by 2½ lengths (on a rainy day), coached by Nick Bevan and stroked by Mark Yale . Another member of the crew was John Garret who later competed in a number of Boat races and in the Olympic Games on three occasions.

    Background to the Maltese Cross
The eight-point cross of the Knights Hospitallers became known as the Maltese Cross when  Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, gave the Knights Hospitallers the island of Malta in the 1550s, after they had been kicked out of Cyprus by the Ottoman Turks.

The eight points of the cross are said to symbolise the eight points of courage: Loyalty; Piety; Generosity; Bravery; Glory and honour; Contempt of death; Helpfulness towards the poor and the sick; Respect for the church.

The Maltese Cross is now used by a number of institutions and establishments, perhaps most notably in this country by St John Ambulance, and it is also on the crown of Shrewsbury School's crest.

In 1866 the Royal Shrewsbury School Boat Club (RSSBC) was founded as a club, run by the boys, for rowing at Shrewsbury. In the original constitution, it stated that the dress rule was, “a straw hat with a dark blue ribbon and a white jersey trimmed with dark blue with a blue Maltese Cross on the front of the jersey.”

Around the 1870’s when the newly formed football clubs were being established around England, many of the first uniform kits to appear were those of the Public Schools and sports clubs with which the game was originally associated. Blackburn Rovers first wore white jerseys adorned with the blue Maltese Cross of Shrewsbury School, as several of their founders had been educated here.

The Boat Club has continued to use the Maltese Cross and although the white lycra trimmed with dark blue with a blue Maltese Cross on the front is now the preserve of the 1st VIII only, the Maltese Cross itself is used in a variety of ways by the boat club.

The umbrellas are available to buy for £30 (+ £5 P&P) from the School Shop 01743 280868 / mhignett@shrewsbury.org.uk, or direct from  Paul Manser, Master in Charge of the Boat Club,  pmanser@shrewsbury.org.uk.

  • Alumni Knots - striking and unusual 'links' to Shrewsbury School

Enterprising young Salopian and recent leaver, Rupert Harvey-Scholes (R 2006-11), has come up with an enterprising scheme - silk knot cufflinks in House colours!  Rupert says:

'Since leaving Shrewsbury last summer and after two years of careful research, I had the perfect opportunity to launch my latest business venture.

Whilst I was at Shrewsbury I thought it would be novel to have a pair of silk knots in the Riggs colours. I could never find any in the high street shops, hard as I tried.  I thought if I wanted a pair then there were bound to be other Salopians and Old Salopians who desired a pair.  Hence Alumni Links was created.

Finally I have found the correct supplier who can actually deliver the correct colours of all the eleven boy’s houses and the Old Salopian Colours.

Having had such a positive response I would love to be able to supply other clubs and societies in the future throughout the United Kingdom who like the idea.

    Get in contact!'

  • RSSBC: Update on the new boathouse...

On the last day of the Michalmas term, a number of pupils volunteered (the lure of hot chocolate and mince pies may have helped!) to help strip all the boats from our old Victorian boathouse, in preparation for its demolition.

The contractors were hoping to have the old boathouse demolished and off site before return to School. As can be seen from the photo (on the right) we are on track. As of yesterday there was another 20 centemetres of earth to remove, before a hardcore back is applied. New foundations will be next.... and the 'photo' below shows what it should end up looking like when it's finished.

If there are any other tearful Old Salopians who would like a couple of bricks for bookends, we have a limited supply!

Rowing continues despite the upheaval, and despite the recent heavy rains, the river is behaving at present.

  • Old Salopians take Blue Chairs for an epic journey across Central Asia

TWO former Shrewsbury School students who took two blue chairs on an epic adventure across central Asia, have helped to raise more than £4,000 for the Blue Chair charity.

James Sutcliffe (SH 2003-08) and Stephen Johanson (Rb 2003-08) took pictures of the chairs throughout their journey for the charity calendar which raises money for the Shrewsbury Blood Trust Fund, Cure Leukaemia and Mind. During their journey James and Stephen, who are now in their third year at the University of Leeds studying medicine, took the chairs to the Arctic Circle, Red Square in Moscow and St Petersburg. They also travelled on the Pamir Highway, which is the second highest road in the world (see photo).

The Blue Chair calender, which is now in its sixth year, is produced by the Blue Chair Movement at Shrewsbury School. Giles Bell, a housemaster at Shrewsbury School said: “Six years ago I was searching for a way to support a student in my care, Artem Bocharov, who was suffering from leukaemia.  Around that time all the staff received an e-mail from a colleague asking for the safe return of two blue chairs that had disappeared from his classroom. I then sent an e-mail around depicting the blue chairs. The response I received led to the start of the Blue Chair Movement. But the best news is that Artem Bocharov has made a full recovery.”

There are still a few calendars left at £10 each.   For more information contact Giles Bell

  • 'A Welsh Odyssey: in the footsteps of Gerald of Wales': a book about the Third Crusade by Old Salopian, Michael Curig Roberts

The latest book by Michael Curig Roberts (R 1952-56)  concerns the intriguing Gerald of Wales, who in 1198 travelled around the Principality with the Archbishop of Canterbury trying to persuade Welshmen to join the Third Crusade.

The author, using Sir Richard Colt Hoare’s 1806 translation of Gerald’s account, examine some of Gerald’s comments about the landscape, culture and personalities of Wales at that time and also travels to see what remains of some of the places Gerald visited.
