  • RSSBC: GB Rowing Trials - Boston
Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th February

Harry Lonergan (O LVI), Tom Marshall (SH UVI) and Fred Day (R UVI) made the trek to Boston Lincs for the annual and final, 5k time trial of the season.

Hopes were high for a good set of results from our top pairing of Harry and Tom, both experienced oarsman on this piece of the river Witham.

Tom Marshall (Stroke) and Harry Lonergan in the GB Trials 2012

Saturday saw them starting 2nd out of the 42 starting pairs; a finish position of 5th place was a good result, especially after the amount of time spent training in this boat. Sunday’s results were very pleasing, after some tinkering with the crew set up and a move up to third. Remembering these are the best junior oarsmen in the country this year, this result puts them in the frame for selection to compete at world level later in the year.

Fred Day had a busy week! Having just returned from an invitation from Dartmouth University in the other Boston in Massachusetts over ½ term  (where he has been offered a place to study and row next year), Fred paddled with an athlete from Abingdon School. His results of 17th on Saturday and 23rd on Sunday also stand him in good stead for a GB vest this season.

  • Rugby: U18 and U15 XV tour to Valencia February 2012
This was a throughly successful and enjoyable week. Visits to the sights and sounds of Valencia's old and new towns, the impressive aquarium and arts and science museums, the Valencia vs Sporting de Gijon La Liga match, a trip to the vast city beach for touch rugby and volleyball, plus plenty of paella made this a trip to remember.

    Under 18 XV Match reports:

    Match 1 vs Comunidad Valencia
    LOST 29-3
In a match that was always going to be the toughest on the tour, the 1st XV played well in fits and spirts but could not counter the speed and physicality of the U18 Valencian regional side who compete in the Spanish National Championships this week. This representative side pulls from around 10-12 club teams as far north as Castellon de la Plana and as far south as Alicante. A new experience for many of the team was playing on an artificial grass and rubber crumb 3G surface, and apart from a few burnt knees, it was a positive introduction. Charlie Farquhar scored Shrewsbury's three points, and many of the opposition's tries came from tight and powerful running around the fringes of the breakdown. There were enough encouraging signs and opportunities to give Shrewsbury heart for the rest of the week.

    Match 2 vs Tecnidex Valencia
    WON 50-5
This was without doubt one of the best performances in recent years by a Shrewsbury XV against a defensively sound club side, but one which didn't have the opportunity to threaten the Shrewsbury line that often. The tempo of play was lightening quick, the speed and aggressiveness at the breakdown outstanding, and some superb handling and back play a real feature. Most improved player of the tour Jamie Galyer really stood out in this one, carrying the ball with real determination and strength and was almost always responsible for stealing some of the opposition ball. Player's Player of the Tour Alasdair Pollock ran the show very well at fly-half and his accurate distribution set off some impressive back moves, finished with precision by Ed Wilson, Tom Fletcher-Wilson and George Ellery amongst others. The boys were on a real high after this one - they knew that the quality of their play had reached new heights.

    Tries: Ellery (2), Wilson, Bridges-Webb, Fletcher-Wilson, Mason (J), Galyer
    Cons: Mason (W) x 6
    Pens: Mason (W)

Match 3 vs CAU Rugby Valencia
    WON 46-7
It was perhaps always going to be difficult to surpass the performance of the night before, but following a good active recovery and stretch in the swimming pool, the team were determined to match the tempo and quality of play, and finish the tour on a high. Once again on a 3G surface, the game was played in an excellent spirit although the officious nature of the referee perhaps spoilt the flow of the match somewhat and there were periods of play that were very stop/start and tedious. However, once again the backs delighted the crowds with some good handling and impressive running lines, and once the scrummage started going forward, the points started to pile up in Shrewsbury's favour. The Spanish defence always threatened more than their offensive patterns or play, but they did breach the Shrewsbury defence once late on in the first half. Captain Oliver Hughes was impressive as ever from number eight with some good ball carries from the base and in midfield. Will Mason, having recovered from a knee injury, always looked threatening with his good pace and quick step. We were treated to some excellent hospitality and a presentation after this and every match.

    Tries: Mason (M) (2), Bridges-Webb, Mason (W), Wynne, Galyer, Fletcher-Wilson
    Cons: Mason (W) x 4
    Pens: Mason (W)

    Under 15 XV Match reports:

    U15 Rugby Tour to Valencia
The tour provided the U15 squad with a chance to experience rugby outside the UK and to play, for many, on artificial pitches. Valencia is something of a rugby enclave with a number of clubs sharing facilities in and around the city. The multiple usage of pitched necessitating the switch to 3G from grass and the building of some impressive facilities.

Our touring squad was somewhat depleted because of injuries sustained in the weeks leading up to the tour and it was fortunate we didn’t sustain any injuries to the backs! The standard of opposition varied somewhat as did their approach to the game and the high quality of most of the referees came as a pleasant surprise. Although the coaches did have a different interpretation of her laws at breakdowns than the referee in the last game.

    Match reports:

    Match 1 vs Comunidad Valencia won 22 - 12

This game was against a Valencia representative team and proved to be a difficult opening game. The opposition were well organised playing a tight forward based game; a pattern we were to see again during the course of the tour. The game was always close and well contested particularly in the early stages although fitness and general match awareness gave Shrewsbury an edge as the game progressed. Shrewsbury looked the more threatening out wide but had to defend stoutly in midfield particularly against a strong Valencia back row.

    Tries:    Litchfield (2) Smith
    Conversions:  Humes (2)
    Penalties:  Humes (1)

    Match 2 vs Tecnidex Valencia won 41 – 0

A somewhat more straightforward game. The opposition was quite strong and committed in the forwards but Shrewsbury had a real advantage out wide and scored regularly throughout the first half. The lead at the break being 36 points. Whenever quick ball was won and moved with purpose a score always looked on the cards and James Plaut led the way with four tries. In the second half Shrewsbury tried to vary the play but the game became very ragged and lost much of its structure which meant the various moves which were tried often came to nothing. However a very strong first half performance had secured the win long before the interval and the game provided an opportunity to rest a number of key players in readiness for the final game.

Tries:    Plaut (4) Smith Peat  Rowley
    Conversions:  Humes (3)

    Under 15s

Match 3 vs CAU Rugby Valencia  lost 20 – 10

Local knowledge indicated that this would be the hardest game of the tour, and so it proved to be. Returning to the 3G surface where we played the opening game, this time under lights, all was set for the final game of the tour. The opposition were well organized and played a tight aggressive game. Unfortunately the referee’s liberal interpretation of laws regarding the breakdown area and players staying on their feet counted against us and Shrewsbury never really got out of third gear against a team which could, and perhaps should, have left the squad unbeaten after 6 tour matches together. However a slight lack of focus and continual changing of players meant that no real pattern of play could be established. At one stage on of the coaches lickened the replacements bench as a scene from MASH!!. Fortunately there were no serious injuries and the game ended in a mixture of frustration and disappointment. However lessons will have been learned and the experience was far from wasted.

    Tries:    Smith Litchfield

  • Rugby: 1st XV v KH VIII School Coventry

In a game of contrasting styles, the result was decided by some poor decision making rather than quality of overall play in the last few minutes of the match. King Henry’s led until the beginning of the 2nd half, when Shrewsbury went up a gear and finished off two smooth passages of play involving many pairs of hands. This was in contrast to King Henry’s typically limited forwards based game which only cam into it’s own inside Shrewsbury’s 22. Shrewsbury led 15-10 entering the last ten minutes, and when losing possession of the ball when playing inside their own 22 twice, King Henry’s capitalized upon basic handling errors. The result did not reflect Shrewsbury’s superiority and flair.

  • Boys Hockey: 1st XI v Adam's Grammar School

The fourth match of the season was the first of our Cup matches, and promised to be a tough one, as we have not beaten Adams Grammar School for some time.  As a result, the team began the match tentatively, but after a few scares around the goalmouth, with some committed saves by Ollie Darrington, Shrewsbury settled their nerves and started to play the level of hockey to which we have aspired during training.

At half-time, despite neither side scoring, Shrewsbury felt confident we had the measure of AGS and began the second period eager to put past losses behind us.

Will Phillips, Tim Bird and Will Milligan-Mamby established some presence in midfield, finding space which was missing in the first half.  With some quick interplay between these three and the front line of Jo Mason, Will Leigh-Bramwell and Ali Bird, Shrewsbury created many more chances, and despite going down by an expertly taken short-corner goal, the pressure eventually gave Will M-M a well-deserved team goal.  The last fifteen minutes proved to be the best hockey of the match, despite not producing a second goal.  Nevertheless, the team came away with a well-earned draw (1-1).

  • Netball: 1st & 2nd VII wins v Adam's Grammar School

The 1st VII started steadily from the 1st quarter and it became a very well matched game in ability and both sides were playing well. After the 1st quarter Shrewsbury took the lead and continued this steady improvement throughout the game. Shrewsbury demonstrated good passing, shooting and defending and moved around the court well. Adams Grammar played well however Shrewsbury’s shooting was immaculate culminating in a 20-15 win.

The 2nd VII got off to an unsteady start not playing to their full potential, yet finished the 1st quarter even (5-5). However the team pulled together and demonstrated their strength in all aspects of the game to build upon their score significantly in each quarter to win 29-13.

    U14's  v Rhydal
The U14’s travelled to Rhydal on Wednesday and faced stiff opposition. The pair Breese and Fox came away victorious, winning 2-1; however there were no more victories. The pair of Mason and White lost 0-3, while Cooke and Lechmere were defeated 1-3. Despite the results, improvements are being made.

    vs St Olaves
On the eve of the Northern Championships the Seniors had a good 2-1 win over St Olaves in a tough and well contested fixture. Henry Lewis and Sam Welti recorded a pleasing 2-1 victory, as did Henry Blofield and Harry Flowers, winning 2-0. The only defeat was involving Guy Williams and Elliott Christie, who were unfortunate to lose 0-2.

Seb Cooley and Tom Dunbar at the EFA Northern Championships 20124/5th Feb Northern Open Championships
The majority of our Senior, U16 and U15 squads gained excellent experience playing against the best adult players in the country. A notable achievement was Sansom Yick and Jamie Humes getting to the final of the Northern Festival. They lost 1-2 in the final to players with at least 10 years more experience. James Dusdon and Win Chirayusalso put in fantastic performances in reaching the festival semi final losing 1-2 to Yick and Humes.

Jack Hudson-Williams and Henry Lewis were the only pair to qualify out of the main tournament, however they came up against the second seeds in the quarter finals and were defeated 0-2. Edward Holroyd and Max Hulse who played until nearly 6pm on Sunday won the Festival Plate.

Seb Cooley (Maths and Physics Master) took the title for the second year running, with his partner Tom Dunbar.  Please see Shrewsbury Master wins Northern Championship for more information.

Well done to all involved in a very good weekend of Fives here at Shrewsbury School.

  • RSSH: Clean sweep of trophies at the County Championships
Shropshire Schools' Cross-Country Championships Saturday 4th February - an historic day for The Hunt with a clean sweep of trophies, including a first ever trophy for the Girls' Hunt!

Intermediate Boys RaceFollowing their best performance at the Coventry national relays since 1998 with a second place on Wednesday, the Hunt went into Saturday's County Championships brimming with confidence, and looking to defend their Senior and Intermediate Boys titles, and hopefully challenge for the Junior Boys and Senior Girls trophies as well.  Despite the cold weather, over 20 Hunt athletes took to the start-line of the various races at Oswestry, with a number of other Hunt athletes due to compete in a Midlands League fixture in Worksop.

Rory FraserIn the first race of the day, our Intermediate boys packed in well in the opening stages, with Rory Fraser, Otto Clarke and Toby Lansdell all tucking in to the lead pack.  The pace was relatively conservative, with none of the runners prepared to push on the pace in the opening lap of the race.  Indeed, these were the tactics for our lead runners, who were instructed to take things easy in the first lap then push hard in the final lap.  An earlier than expected challenge was mounted, however, by the 2010 Junior Boys' Champion Ben Ashcroft from The Grange, though Rory Fraser sensed the danger and kept on Ashcroft's heels.  Going into the final lap, Rory pushed hard and secured a lead, eventually finishing the race in some style with a win by a comfortable margin, winning the championship individual title and following in the footsteps of last year's winner Ed Mallett (and becoming only the third ever Hunt runner to have won the county champs in this age-group since the competition was begun in 1978).  With Otto Clarke coming home in 3rd, Toby Lansdell just outside the medals in 4th, and final 'counter' Angus Hayward in 13th, the team total of 21 points was more than enough to win the trophy for the third year running, the 16th time in 34 years the Hunt have brought the title home.  Fraser, Clarke and Lansdell have all earned county selection for the Nationals on the back of their performance.

In the Senior Girls' race, we brought a quartet whom we believed could really challenge this year in a championship race that we have never won since entering it in 2010.  However, following a strong performance at the national relays mid-week, the squad spirit amongst the girls was running high, and there was real confidence in them all.  The race proved an exciting affair, with our girls starting the race modestly, but over the course of the distance, their training kicked in and their superior stamina told.  Imola Atkins pushed through the field, and despite being off the pace in the first lap, she eventually ran through the positions to take home the individual bronze medal, adding to the silver she won last year.  However, this year, Imola was backed up by a talented group of L6th formers, and with Anna Thompson coming home in 4th, Becky Home in 5th, and Libby Naylor in 6th, our team total was convincing and meant that for the very first time, the girls lifted the Senior Girls' County Championship trophy, a proud day for all concerned, and a significant and historic one, for this was the very first trophy won by the Girls' Hunt - the first of many we hope!  All four girls will travel to the Nationals in March at Taunton as part of the Shropshire team.

Ed MallettWith two trophies already won, our talented Seniors took to the field knowing that the squad was a strong one, despite being without Huntsman George Mallett (the 2011 individual County Champion), who was left at home struggling with an injury.   Tactically, we were hoping for a similar race to the Intermediate boys, but Ed Mallett found himself breaking free in the opening stages and pushed clear of the lead pack, isolating himself as a front-runner.  It was a move that would later cause problems, for in the second lap, Ed was chased down by last year's silver medalist Ryan Heath from Telford AC, who strode past him and took a lead of around 15m.  Yet Ed did not give up, and in a spirited fight back, by the time the runners moved into the final lap, Ed was within 5m of Heath, eventually pulling past him and restoring his early lead.  By the close of the race, the distance between the two was significant, possibly as much as 200m, and Ed was able to come home as Senior County Champion, a title he will be able to defend next year.   He follows in the footsteps of not only his elder brother George, but five other Hunt individual champions at this level, including Tim Bedell in the very first championships in 1978.  In the team event, Ed's performance was matched by a very impressive bronze-medal from the rapidly-improving Seb Blake, 5th place for Tom Cousins, and 6th place for Ed Lloyd.  A score of 15 (10 points is the 'perfect score') meant that the Hunt easily retained the team trophy for the third year running, and all four 'counters' have earned county-selection for the Nationals.

In the final race of the day, the Junior Boys took as strong a squad as we have had in a number of years, and it was our hope that they would return the trophy that we last won in 2009, and come home with the fourth trophy of the day.  We weren't to be disappointed, with New Boys' Race winner Oscar Dickins in fine form, coming over the finish line in 4th place in what was a very talented field (including winner of Shrewsbury Schools' recent Prep Schools' XC Champs, Packwood's Freddie Fielding- very much a star of the future!).  Our four counters came home with an impressive score of 29, with Oscar's performance added to by Tom Sykes in 6th, 9th place for Gene Ratanadaros, and Barnaby Seager in 10th place.  The fourth trophy of the day was won by our Junior Boys, making this an historic clean-sweep of trophies!  Both Oscar and Tom will join the twelve other Hunt runners who have been selected for the Nationals, and we look forward to seeing some strong performances from them all.

  • RSSBC: Silver medal win at Hampton Head - Saturday 4th February 2012

J14 Octo "Lennon" - Silver Medalists

On a day when other races around the country succumbed to the icy weather, Hampton Head remained on, and 18 third formers headed to London to brave the River Thames for the very first time.

Racing in two matched octuples named "Lennon" and "McCartney", all of the boys raced with great control and power. "Lennon" benefitted from its members spending more time on the water in the last few weeks, and came away with a fantastic silver medal, just 5 seconds behind King's Chester. A number of the rowers in "McCartney" share their time this term between rowing and other sports, so 11th place out of the 30 crews competing shows the potential that they have as oarsmen. The combined times of our two crews made Shrewsbury the fastest team on the water.

We will now begin the process of starting to construct A, B, C (and potentially D) octos for the National Junior Sculling Head in March on Dorney Lake (just 4 months before it plays host to the Olympic Games!).

  • Netball: Silver medal at the annual Malvern St James Tournament
With our larger cohort of Sixth Form girls this year, we were able to enter two teams into this tournament for the first time.  Our A team were runners-up in their pool, winning Silver medals - our first-ever Netball medal win!  Our B team were also runners-up in their pool, and came 4th overall.  This was the culmination of an outstanding week for our netball teams - they continue to perform superbly in the Tuesday evening Harper Adams League – another win last Tuesday night, and both the 1st & 2nd VII defeated Adams Grammar School on Wednesday afternoon.

Shrewsbury travelled to the Malvern St James netball tournament on Saturday 4th February. Previous years the tournament has always been competitive, but very enjoyable. With encouraging results from netball fixtures so far this term and the continuation of Tuesday evening league, we were looking forward to the challenge, and for the first time we had 2 teams in the tournament. The tournament was divided into 2 pools; Division A and Division B, each game lasting 8 minutes in length, with 2 minute change over. The winners of Division A played the runners up of Division B and then the winners of Division B played the Runners up of Division A which lead to the final.

Photo -  Katy Mason-Jones, Elen Murphy, Eli Palje Rhys-Davies, Lucy Emms, Alice Paul, Hannah Pritchard, Rebecca Haynes.

In the A division, Shrewsbury 1st VII came up against a very high standard, quick moving Christ College netball team and had fought back to a 4-4 score until Christ College pulled away to win 7-4. However, we came back with strength against Edgbaston High School and played to our full potential demonstrating clean, clear passing and excellent movement around court to win 7-5. The confidence of the team grew when it came to playing Malvern St James 2 and the excellent playing continued with beautiful movement of the ball from centre third into the goal third, and very tight marking by defence provided Shrewsbury with an 11-0 win. Our final game in Division A was against a strong Kings School; there were slight mistakes on both sides, however an evenly matched game to finish 5-5.

Shrewsbury 1st VII came Runners up in Division A and had to meet Malvern St James 1 (Winners of Division B). Shrewsbury started off unsteadily, making unnecessary mistakes and forcing the ball which resulted in Shrewsbury trailing by 0-3. However Shrewsbury regained their confidence and played outstandingly well, passing the ball elegantly around the court, with beautiful finishing from the attackers to win 6-3.

Shrewsbury 1st VII then met Christ College School who are renowned as a netball school in the final. Shrewsbury played amazingly, they picked up their game and their movement around the court was effortless. There was sharp passing down the wings to our fast moving attacking players who scored time and time again, which was further aided by our defence that blocked and zoned extremely well. The game was very intense and ended in a 5-5 score which resulted in 5 minutes extra time being played. Christ College in extra time brought their game up and went on to score 3 consecutive goals, however Shrewsbury fought back breaking their centre twice to come back, with the game finishing 7-8 to Christ College.

An amazing game played by both teams, with Shrewsbury School walking away with Runners-Up.

In the B Division, Shrewsbury 2nd VII also came up against Christ College 2nd as their first match. Once again a high tempo game, with quick movement around court and sharp passing skills, Shrewsbury were drawing level 4-4; however Christ College came back with strength and ended the game 4-7. Shrewsbury 2nd VII came back full of confidence against Hanley Castle and demonstrated their ability and experience with some excellent defending but also good movement of the ball from the centre third into the goal third, Shrewsbury dominated the game to win 8-2. This continued into the final game within division B against Malvern St James 1, Shrewsbury played well kept tight when marking and finished off most shots on goal they had. Shrewsbury demonstrated their skilful play and it was a very evenly matched game but Shrewsbury ensured that the finish was theirs, winning 5-4.

Shrewsbury 2nd VII came runners up in division B, which meant playing Christ College 1st team. Shrewsbury were stretched against such a fast team, however played extremely well and fought for each and every pass and shot, unfortunately Christ College were too fast and played effortlessly to win 2-9.

Shrewsbury then came up against Malvern St James 2 to decide who would take 3rd and 4th place. Shrewsbury started very well and demonstrated their ability on court, however the result of playing two consecutive matches  took its toll and Shrewsbury became tired. Malvern St James 2nd took their lead and just kept the lead to win 9-5 and take 3rd place. Shrewsbury 2nd VII then took 4th position out of 9 very high standard teams.

Overall it was a great morning of netball and to see Shrewsbury 1st VII came away with runners up and Shrewsbury 2nd VII to come 4th against very high standard netball teams was excellent.

    Congratulations Girls.

  • Netball: 1st & 2nd VII wins v King's Chester School

The 1st VII started soundly from the first quarter, but not playing to their full potential. Shrewsbury were dead level with Kings Chester until the third quarter where the girls in blue took the lead 14-13 in this very tight contest. The game was evenly matched with concise passing skills and communication evident from both sides, however in the fourth quarter Shrewsbury raised their levels and eventually pulled away winning 24-14, with some unstoppable shooting and passing skills on show. Player of the match was awarded to Lucy Emms (GS).

The 2nd VII played extremely well from the first whistle against their Kings opponents, demonstrating their strength in all elements of the game. This was illustrated in the score line at the first quarter, with Shrewsbury going in with an 8-2 lead. The girls built upon this to finish with a resounding 28-8 win. Shrewsbury 2nd VII have demonstrated confidence across all elements of netball from concise passing, accurate shooting, tight marking and fluency of ball up and down the court. The player of the match was awarded to both Holly Free (WD) and Izzy Barber (WA).

  • Rugby: w/c 23rd January 2012

Once again, Adams GS have reached the latter stages of the Daily Mail U18 Cup this season, so the 1st XV knew it was going to be a tough match on Saturday. However, the 1st XV put together a very creditable performance, and although the score line might not suggest as much, the Shrewsbury defence dealt with most things Adams threw at it, particularly in midfield and around the fringes. Adams' tries tended to be scored from broken play and spilt ball when the Shrewsbury defence was at it's most disorganised and struggling to shape itself from offence to defence. Oliver Hughes was impressive at No.8 and Paddy Lynch-Staunton a terrific target and example as captain. Will Mason kicked Shrewsbury's points.

In other results, the 2nd XV had a pleasing 30-5 victory against Kings Chester 1st XV. This was a most encouraging performance and some good team tries were scored. Saturday’s opponents Adams were a different proposition and they were more streetwise and battle hardened. Several basic mistakes lead to avoidable tries being conceded but the team battled bravely to the final whistle and will have learnt from the experience.

The 3rd XV suffered a heavy defeat against their Adams Grammar opponents (0-43), while the U15 A’s also suffered defeat, losing out 7-40. Results continued in a similar vein, with both the U14 A and B sides losing out to their Adams counterparts, 12-36 and 5-17 respectively. However, despite the defeat, a patched up U14 B side came away with huge credit, after dominating large spells of the game. Regardless of the results, many of the sides produced positive performances, and they will learn to cut out the costly errors that are being made across the board.

  • Football: 1st XI vs Wolverhampton Grammar

Wolverhampton Grammar were the visitors to Senior on Wednesday to face a Shrewsbury A XI. The first half ended goalless, however a solid second half performance from the Shrewsbury A XI saw Max Pragnell score twice, once from the penalty spot, to give Shrewsbury a convincing win.

Several players were making their debut in the school A XI and gave positive performances, providing much food for thought.

  • RSSH: National Relays at Coventry - SECOND PLACE!
The national Coventry Relays on February 1st was a terrific day for the Hunt runners, both boys and girls, with some incredibly exciting racing.  The boys were thrilled with their 2nd place, particularly as we only eventually got there in the final lap, with Ed Mallett hunting down St Alban's final leg runner.  All members of staff lost their voices and probably embarrassed themselves with their excitement!

Having placed third in the national long run at Knole Park at the start of term, there was real optimism going into the annual Coventry Relays, effectively the national schools' relay event, and certainly the most significant event on the schools' running calendar.  Past athletes at the event have included Seb Coe, and World Triathlon Champion Jon Brownlee, and the standard is always extremely high.  The Hunt have twice taken the national title - in 1995 and 1996, though we have not placed within the top three in the past 10 years.  However, as the race programme intimated, our recent rise up the placings in the past few years was "ominous".  Indeed, having placed 24th in 2009, we won the John Vickers Cup for Most Improved Team in 2010 having risen to 11th, then last year (despite being without Huntsman Cal Winwood), we placed 6th, the first time since 2003 that we had featured amongst the top 10 schools.

Seb BlakeIn what is a large-scale relay event (indeed over 50 six-man relay squads compete in the boys' race, with a total of over 300 runners), it is always important to secure a solid start, and we knew we could rely on 5th form speedster Otto Clarke to get us out of trouble early on.  A 12.37 leg for the 2.3 mile course was pretty much bang on what we had asked him to do, and though we were only in 8th position after the first leg, this was to be expected, with many teams placing their top runners first and second if they do not possess a consistently strong squad.  Indeed, at the close of the first leg, past-winners Manchester Grammar School were in the lead, though later they would fade to 7th overall, and they were tailed by QEGS Penrith, who could not match their strong opening leg and faded to 22nd.  Our second leg runner - Senior Whip Tom Cousins - ran a similarly solid 12.39, and despite dropping down to 9th position during his leg, by the close of his lap he was able to regain position.  Our tactics were to attack hard in the middle of the race and follow it up with a strong final lap, and it was during the course of the third lap that our strength in depth began to show.  Seb Blake ran a blinding 12.08 lap (narrowly just outside the top 10 times for the day out of all athletes), and with typical boldness, he picked off the athletes one by one, eventually taking us through the middle stage of the course into 3rd position, our target placing for this year.  We had spoken for many weeks about our prospects of reaching the top three and medalling at the event, and having done our research into our competitors, we were sure we had the quality and depth to achieve this.

Indeed, over the course of the fourth lap, despite facing pressure from Manchester Grammar's Ryan Ganose, Huntsman George Mallett broke the 12-minute barrier with an impressive 11.53, which we would later learn was the joint third fastest time of the day (with only seven athletes dipping under 12 minutes).  We held position in 3rd, and handed over to 5th former Rory Fraser, who had been briefed the previous evening at our pre-race pasta dinner about his role in the squad.  We thought we would be in touching distance of St Albans who by this point were in 2nd position behind Judd, leaders of the race since lap two and eventual winners.  Rory's task was not only to hold position but to try and keep us within sight of St Albans, who we believed were beatable, despite their squad having been selected to represent England U16 at the World Schools' in Malta later this year.  Rory ran a hard 12.27, which was important as it was three seconds quicker than the St Albans runner.  And so Ed Mallett took over in the final leg, with a distance of 20 seconds between the two teams, but certainly still in sight.  Despite being up against St Alban's Joe Redwood (winner of the 2011 King's Cup in Wimbledon), Ed was determined to run the race of his life and try and do all he could to close the gap.  As the two runners approached 'The Garden Section' of the course with just over 1.5km to go, Ed had unbelievably closed the gap to a mere matter of seconds, prompting Hunt coaches PJM, IPH and OKT to (almost) lose composure completely in their excitement!  Later, Ed would reflect that it was at this moment in the leg that he knew he could take Redwood, and to do so, he knew he would have to kick hard for 20-30m to get past him and put distance between them.  That he did, and as he sprinted down the final section and towards the finish in Memorial Park, the result was not in doubt, and Ed eventually finished 10 seconds ahead of St Albans, turning over the 20 second deficit, and in the process running the second-fastest leg of all athletes on the day, an incredible 11.49, improving over 1 minute 20 seconds on his time from last year.  In the end, despite their lead of over a minute and a half in the opening stages, the gap between Shrewsbury and winners Judd was a mere 30 seconds.

Next year (6th February 2013), it is our belief that we can challenge to take the National title for the first time in 17 years.  Whilst we will lose both George Mallett and Tom Cousins, we need only look at our 'B' team's fabulous 12th position at the relays to see the depth coming through.  It was only two years ago that our 'A' team placed 11th, so this result was almost as impressive as our 2nd place, with the team (3rd former Oscar Dickins, Junior Whip Will Spencer Jones; George Nugee; Ed Lloyd; Angus Hayward; and Toby Lansdell) beating over 20 schools' 'A' teams, including past winners St Anselm's and King Henry VIII.

Further encouragement came from the girls' team of Becky Home, Imola Atkins, Libby Naylor and Anna Thompson, who were hoping to build on their excellent performance at January's Knole Run.  Following a solid opening lap of 16.44 from Becky Home, Imola Atkins's time of 15.37 pushed the team up the placings, and following further strong performances from Libby Naylor and Anna Thompson (17.47 and 15.46 respectively), the Hunt came home in 15th place overall out of 28 teams, an excellent achievement, particularly since last year we placed 24th.  There is a really strong sense of cohesion within the group, and they go into Saturday's County Championships full of optimism as we attempt to take the team trophy there for the very first time.

  • Cricket: 1st XI win SSSAA Award

Back L-R: Jack Bailey, James Aston, Jack Hudson-Williams, Rhuaudri Smith, Will Mason, Alistair Pollock
Front L-R: Andy Barnard (Master IC Cricket), Stephen Leach, Henry Lewis (Captain), Jamie Board, Mark Prescott, Charlie Farquhar

Shropshire Schools' Sports & Athletics Association (SSSAA) Awards Presentation

As a result of our team winning the HMC National T20 competition in September 2011, the 1st XI were invited to the John Beswick International Awards Presentation Evening on 31st January at the Council Chamber in the Shirehall.

This is the fourth time that Shrewsbury School have won the Team Award since its inception in 1988:
2004 Shrewsbury School U15 XI - Winning the ECB Lord Taverners Trophy
2008 Shrewsbury School 1st VIII - Winning the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Henley
2010 Shrewsbury School U15 XI - Winning the ESCA National T20

2011 was an outstanding year for cricket, for both our 1st XI and U15 teams. Remarkably, last year's 1st XI squad contained only one U18 player, so our 2012 squad will start with 10 players who already have a year's experience at this level.  Two members played for the ECB U17 Development XI last summer, and two members played for Shrewsbury CC when they won the ECB National Club Championship.

  • Fives: First schoolboys to become National U21s Champions
At the EFA National U21s Tournament at Eton on Sunday 29th January 2012, Henry Lewis and Jack Hudson-Williams became the first schoolboy pair ever to win the National U21 title - after an all-Salopian final!

Please also see http://www.fivesonline.net/etonfives/433-under-21s-shrewsbury-show-the-way.html for a gripping report on the tournament.

U21s EFA National 2012Seven Salopians (five present two past), played in the U21s tournament at Eton On Sunday 29th January 2012. Five reached their respective finals.

    GROUP STAGES
Henry Lewis (I) & Jack Hudson-Williams (PH) came an untroubled top of their group. Sam Welti (I) & Tom Welti (OS) did the same.  Guy Williams (Rb) & Jack Flowers (I) came top after a good 12-5 victory over Highgate's top senior pair.

    QUARTER FINALS
In the quarter finals, Guy Williams and Jack Flowers drew Highgate's top U16 pair and lost very narrowly: 13-11 in the deciding game.

Jack Hudson-Williams and Henry Lewis, U21 ChampionsSEMI FINALS & FINAL
Both the other pairs made it through to the final, Sam Welti and Tom Welti having been in a very close-fought semi 13-12, 13-15, 12-6. This left them without the reserves they would have needed to challenge Lewis & Hudson-Williams in the final, so the latter triumphed 12-5 , 12-6 to take the U21’s title.

Jack Hudson-Williams & Henry Lewis therefore become the first school boy pair to win the National U21 title.

    Old Salopian Girl into Final
Congratulations also Hannah Blofield (OS) reached the final of the Ladies' competition with her Bath University partner Emily Scoones.

  • Samson Yick (G IV) wins Silver medal in U17 Badminton tournament

Samson Yick (G IV) came away with a silver medal from the Badminton England U17 Bronze tournament in Worcester over the weekend.  Samson was the only representative from Shropshire in the tournament, and he was drawn against players with English rankings varying from 819 to 293.

This is only the second badminton tournament that Samson has ever entered, so is a really remarkable achievement.

  • Cricket: Third Former selected for the Warwickshire U14 squad

George Panayi (Ch 3) has represented Hertfordshire Cricket Board up to the U13 age group, and in moving to Shrewsbury and the Midlands, wanted to pursue age group cricket with a major first class county.

George PanayiGeorge trialed at Edgbaston last summer and again in November, and has been successful in being selected for the U14 Warwickshire winter training group. He will take part in the Warwickshire District Festival in May, and hopes to gain selection for the summer squad which takes part in the ECB National U14 County Competition.

    PG

His housemaster writes, 'George is also making a name for himself as a talented a school rugby and fives player, the latter a new sport for him, but which he sees as very useful for his development as a cricketer. As if this weren't enough to juggle, he is also a music exhibitioner, playing the double bass, piano and singing. But perhaps more important than any of these qualities, he is as pleasant a young man as you could possibly hope to meet, and has been a terrific addition to the Churchill's community.'

  • Football: 1st XI vs Shrewsbury Town FC

Shrewsbury Town FC were far too strong, fit and well organised and we ended up on the end of a 0-6 defeat. It was an excellent workout for our players who did a lot of hard work out of possession.

Playing against boys of the same age who train every day in an attempt to make a career from the game, was an invaluable experience for our boys. The increased tempo of play and extra pace that was evident throughout the Shrewsbury Town players gives our boys a target to aim for. Only positive lessons can be extracted from this game, despite the heavy scoreline.

  • Rugby: w/c 16th January 2012

1st XV vs King Edwards School, Birmingham
The 1st XV lost to an organised and speedy KES Birmingham team on Saturday. After going four tries down quite quickly in the first half, Shrewsbury fought back with two early penalties (Will Mason) in the second half and some spirited try line pressure. Max Mason was particularly aggressive and effective around the park. Unfortunately KES possessed a terrifically powerful and quick wing who is an U18 GB Rugby league international, and when given space, he was too hot to handle. Final score 50-6 but there were positives and a fantastic spirit shown.

    Other results
The U15 A’s had a convincing win against a poor Ludlow side earlier in the week, however they were then on the end of a heavy defeat themselves against KES losing 0-43.

The U14 age group got their Shrewsbury rugby career off to a flying start, recording a crushing 83-5 victory over Ludlow, followed up by both the U14 A and B’s beating KES 24-12 and 50-17 respectively. Well done to all involved.

Fives vs Wolverhampton Grammar School – Home
Wolverhampton Grammar were the visitors to Shrewsbury on Thursday, providing matches for senior boys, girls and junior boys. The senior pair of Bromley Davenport and Styles got the team of to a great start recording a 2-0 victory. The other senior pair of Sansom and Chirayus didn’t fare so well, coming away defeated 0-3. All three of the senior girls pairs of Parr and Pritchard; Home and Naylor and Free and Adams recorded victories against their Wolverhampton counterparts, 2-1, 2-0, 1-0 respectively.

Mixed results were had from the U14 boys with both Lechmere and Parsonage and Webber and Champion coming away with draws, whilst Iles and Arridge lost 0-2. More encouraging news was had by Pope and Harris who defeated the Wolverhampton pair 2-0. Overall results were, won 5, drew 2 and lost 2.

    Fives vs Highgate
A busy weekend of fives kicked off against Highgate on Saturday. Results emanating from the seniors were very impressive, with all four pairs claiming victory. Other results were mixed, with the U16 pairs coming away with two victories and two defeats, mirroring that of the U15s who also picked up two wins against two defeats. The U14 pairs didn’t fare so well, with all six pairs losing out against their Highgate counterparts.

    Fives vs Eton
The busy weekend continued as Shrewsbury visited Eton. The senior pairs again demonstrated their superb skills and tactics, winning all four games. The U16s didn’t fare so well, losing three out of the four matches, whilst the U15s reversed these results, recording three victories to only one defeat from four pairs. The U14 pairs came away with two victories against four defeats, to complete a very competitive weekend of fives.

  • Badminton vs. Wrekin College

The school team enjoyed a well contested match against Wrekin College, with honours being shared. The boys trio of Pao (captain), Taylor and Awin won all of their games, in doubles and singles, playing some excellent and consistent badminton. The trio of girls, Amanda, Nurun, Azimah all played well and positively, but were unable to make much of an impact against a stronger Wrekin group.

Special mention to Pao who again lead the team in a responsible and very Salopian like way.

  • Fencing v Rugby School

The foil team of Chris Williams, Stephen Li and Marco Lee defeated Rugby School 7-2 on Saturday, whilst the epée team of Jack Viljoen, Charlie Godman and Arthur Cheng won 4-2.

Some excellent fencing was produced by both teams and provided a fantastic way to start the term.

  • Hockey: w/c 16th January 2012

    1st XI vs Wrekin College
The 1st XI finally managed to play their first match of the term against Wrekin College, following a previous postponement. It was an opportunity to ‘blood’ many of the new members of the squad, with continuous substitutions throughout the game.

Shrewsbury immediately put the opposition under pressure, and within ten minutes had been awarded three short corners, the third of which gave Will Phillips his first goal of the season. The restart was rapidly repossessed by Shrewsbury and, after some quick interplay in the midfield, the forwards were given a chance to attack the ‘D’ yet again.  This time no short corner was required, and a neat pass from Will P to Tim Bird gave the latter a direct shot at goal, which he took with aplomb.

Unfortunately Shrewsbury could not sustain a renewed attack in the second half, and after fifteen minutes had conceded two goals after some aberrations in defence. Nevertheless, the team managed to change the momentum of the game back in their favour and after a series of continued attacks, were given another short corner, which Will Leigh-Bramwell converted. A fourth goal followed, giving Shrewsbury a satisfying 4-2 victory in their first outing this term.

    vs Ellesmere
Many changes were apparent from the first game of the season resulting in little continuity within the Shrewsbury performance.  Despite this, Shrewsbury found themselves up 4-0 at the interval, after an easy first half, and added two more during the second.  The goals, in order, went to Joe Mason, Will Leigh-Bramwell, Ali Bird, Will Milligan-Mamby, Will Phillips and Will Nolan. The Ellesmere conciliation goal came from a short corner, which was badly defended in the dying embers of the game.

    JVL

    U16 vs Ellesmere
Ellesmere were the visitors to Shrewsbury, but with strong players in central defence, the midfield and at centre-forward we didn’t feel in too much danger of losing. However goals were slow in coming and we were only 1-0 up at half time.  Will Speed scored his second goal in the middle of the second half and another from Dan Legge before the final whistle gave us a comfortable 3-0 win in the end.

  • Netball: w/c 16th January 2012

    Moreton Hall
On Wednesday the 1st VII started well against Moreton and demonstrated clean, sharp passing that flowed down the court form the centre players to the shooters. The defence were very tight and zoned off excellently when Moreton were on the attack. The Shrewsbury girls kept a good lead throughout all four quarters to finish with a 24-9 win. Woman of the match was awarded to Lucy Emms (GS).

Our 2nd team started strong and kept a steady lead right from the 1st quarter to the last. It was a very competitive match however Shrewsbury demonstrated their superior skill and ability as the match proceeded to win 25-6. An excellent win for Shrewsbury and woman of the match was given to Libby Naylor (WA).

    Concord College
The 2nd VII played extremely well and demonstrated their maturity and level of skill against a Concord College side that at times were quite aggressive. Shrewsbury started strong in the 1st quarter and continued on into the 4th quarter despite some unfair decisions from the umpires. In spite of this, the Shrewsbury girls kept their heads, demonstrating immaculate passing to the shooter which was beautiful to watch. Shrewsbury really pulled together as a team and communicated well, to finish the match with a win of 26-14. The woman of the match was awarded to Till Whittingham (GD) who directed the team from the back.

  • RSSH: Senior and Colts win in Midlands League
Our Colts had an 8-point victory over Rugby (2nd) and Uppingham (3rd); the Senior race saw Salopians in all top three places, helping Shrewsbury to a staggering 91 point win over Wellingborough (2nd) and Oundle (3rd).

On Saturday the Hunt travelled to Uppingham with two elite squads, one in the Colts race and one in the Senior. This was the first of the four Midlands League races, which includes some of the best schools of the region. Among the competition were Oundle, Worksop, Wellbeck, Rugby,  Wrekin College and the hosts Uppingham. Both teams performed superbly, winning both the Junior and Senior team races.

The Junior team started their 2.4-mile race conservatively, with Rory Fraser among the leading pack and Otto Clarke tucking in behind, with our other five runners spread through the field. However, their fitness told in the late stages and several places were made up in a fast finish. Rory Fraser, Otto Clarke and Toby Lansdell had particularly strong races, finishing 3rd, 5th and 6th respectively, as did a fast-improving Angus Hayward - making a welcome return to Hunt racing - in an impressive 14th. This was enough to win the team race by 8 points.

It was in the Senior race that our dominance really told, however, with the Mallett brothers finishing the 3.6-mile course in a serene and imperious 1st and 2nd, and Seb Blake not far behind in 3rd. With superb efforts from Tom Cousins (6th), George Nugee (8th) and Will Spencer-Jones (14th), this team demolished the field and beat the second-place team by 81 points. Well done to all who ran on what proved to be a fantastic day for the Hunt.

  • RSSH: Victory in the Adams' Dash

Wednesday 18th January saw a terrific performance by some of the Hunt's less regular runners, as they stormed to victory in the Adams Dash, defeating Adams' Grammar and Wrekin College while our top squad were training separately for the upcoming Coventry Relays.

This 4-mile cross country route was a chance for some new talent to emerge, and they took that opportunity brilliantly. Angus Hayward finished 4th in an excellent return to Hunt racing, followed by Henry Dashwood in 5th. Tim Atkins, Theo Clarke and Jake Samuel also had strong races, making our team points total up to a very impressive 30.

The best run of the day belonged to Will Spencer Jones, however, who finished 2nd in his best performance of the season to date.

Well done to all who competed.

  • RSSBC Umbrellas

The RSSBC have produced some wonderful Maltese Cross umbrellas, which are now on sale in our School Shop (see details below).  They are plain navy, with a white Maltese Cross on each quadrant, and a full colour Shrewsbury School Crest on a button on the handle.

The picture in the background of our umbrella poster is of the 1st V111 wining the final at Henley in 1980 beating Radley College by 2½ lengths (on a rainy day), coached by Nick Bevan and stroked by Mark Yale . Another member of the crew was John Garret who later competed in a number of Boat races and in the Olympic Games on three occasions.

    Background to the Maltese Cross
The eight-point cross of the Knights Hospitallers became known as the Maltese Cross when  Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, gave the Knights Hospitallers the island of Malta in the 1550s, after they had been kicked out of Cyprus by the Ottoman Turks.

The eight points of the cross are said to symbolise the eight points of courage: Loyalty; Piety; Generosity; Bravery; Glory and honour; Contempt of death; Helpfulness towards the poor and the sick; Respect for the church.

The Maltese Cross is now used by a number of institutions and establishments, perhaps most notably in this country by St John Ambulance, and it is also on the crown of Shrewsbury School's crest.

In 1866 the Royal Shrewsbury School Boat Club (RSSBC) was founded as a club, run by the boys, for rowing at Shrewsbury. In the original constitution, it stated that the dress rule was, “a straw hat with a dark blue ribbon and a white jersey trimmed with dark blue with a blue Maltese Cross on the front of the jersey.”

Around the 1870’s when the newly formed football clubs were being established around England, many of the first uniform kits to appear were those of the Public Schools and sports clubs with which the game was originally associated. Blackburn Rovers first wore white jerseys adorned with the blue Maltese Cross of Shrewsbury School, as several of their founders had been educated here.

The Boat Club has continued to use the Maltese Cross and although the white lycra trimmed with dark blue with a blue Maltese Cross on the front is now the preserve of the 1st VIII only, the Maltese Cross itself is used in a variety of ways by the boat club.

The umbrellas are available to buy for £30 (+ £5 P&P) from the School Shop 01743 280868 / mhignett@shrewsbury.org.uk, or direct from  Paul Manser, Master in Charge of the Boat Club,  pmanser@shrewsbury.org.uk.

    H-Williams & Lewis   Won 3-1
    Welti & Williams Lost 0-3
    B-Davenport & Christie Lost 0-3
    Jones & Mucklow Won 3-2

  • Fives: U14s & U15s v Uppingham and Oakham
Sunday 15th January 2012, at Uppingham

Our U14s and U15s travelled to Uppingham on Sunday to play the Rutland schools and came away with excellent results. Vs Uppingham in the morning our U14s performed strongly, George Panayi and Tom Breese winning 3-0 at first pair and Max Parsonage and Charlie Cooke inflicting the same result at second pair.

In the afternoon, Oakham came across. George Lewis and Nick Peace beat their top senior pair 3-0 in a very good battle, Jamie Humes and Dan Delikatniy beat their U16 pair and the U14s (now Panayi & Parsonage, Cooke and Ben Sansom) repeated their morning's dominance. Ollie Nolan and Tom Breese followed up by breezing past the U16 pair too. Indeed the only game dropped in the day was when Humes and Delikatniy took on Oakham's top pair and lost 13-14 in a nailbiter.

  • Fives: Ladies EFA Open Championship at Eton College

Eight LVI girls travelled to Eton College to take part in their first fives competition. Playing against vastly more experienced school, university and club players, our girls did well. All pairs played a total of at least 6 sets, and all the girls played better and better as the day went by.

  • RSSH: Success at the National Knole Run
Pre-season training at Hunt HQ (Rigg's) pays off as Shrewsbury makes it into the top three schools in the UK.

The annual Knole Run in Sevenoaks always provides a suitably rigorous and challenging season opener for the cross-country campaign, and the event- now in its 38th year- is one of the toughest and longest races the Hunt competes in.  Following our strong performance last year in which we moved inside the top five schools in the country, we were determined to make further strides forward this year, our primary goal in 2012 being to cement our position in the top three schools in the UK.  To that end, aside from the hard training of the Michaelmas term, ten boys returned early from the Christmas break for three days pre-season training at Hunt HQ for the weekend- Rigg's Hall.

Two boys teams travelled down to Kent feeling better prepared than ever before, and we were delighted this year to take for the first time a girls squad of some promise, and indeed the girls did not disappoint.  Despite having never competed on the 3.6km course, the girls looked impressive and reaped the rewards of their hard training with ARH over the winter term.  Amy Stockdale (EDH) was the standout performer coming home in 19th/115, and she was backed up by Imola Atkins (MSH) in 33rd, Anna Thompson (MSH) in 34th, Becky Home (MSH) in 51st, and Libby Naylor (EDH) in 91st.  With four runners 'counting', this meant that the girls were placed 6th overall out of 19 teams, a terrific result in their first outing at Knole.

The Mallett BrothersIn the boys event, a record field took to the starting line with 41 teams competing and over 320 runners competing.  Our strength in depth was palpable, with 'B' team runner Toby Lansdell (PH) coming home in 58th in a time of 39.16.   With further strong performances from Will Spencer Jones (PH) in 77th and Tom Fitzpatrick (R) in 144th, the 'B' squad placed 23rd overall out of the 41 teams, particularly impressive when one looks at the 'A' teams they beat from such notable schools as Brighton College, Oundle, Lancing, and Christ's Hospital.

We have high hopes for our top runners this year, and if the Knole is anything to go by, this will prove a vintage season.  Indeed, Huntsman George Mallett (S) was on typically fine form as he led our attack slotting in amongst the lead pack.  Having placed just outside the top 10 last year, he was determined to push higher this year, and we were delighted when he came home in 5th position overall.  His time of 34.11 would have been good enough for 2nd overall last year, a measure of just how competitive it is this season.  Younger brother Ed Mallett did well to ensure he came home in the top 10, and our final four counters came home in a flurry with 33rd for Churchill's Rory Fraser, 35th for Severn Hill's Seb Blake, 27th for Port Hill's Tom Cousins, and 44th for Ridgemount's Ed Lloyd.  There was a nervous wait at the presentation ceremony after the race as we knew last year's bronze medalists Abingdon would be close, but in the end, our score of 164 beat Abingdon's score by 23 points, and the team were able to go up and collect their medals for securing third spot.  There were only 24 points between ourselves and second-placed St Alban's, and though the gap between ourselves and winners The Judd School (who have now won the event three in a row) is still significant, we have closed the gap from 203 points last year, to 87 this year.  It will be all to play for at the National Relays in Coventry in just over two weeks time, and the Hunt will look to match their performance at the Knole with a top-three spot there as well, and indeed we will look to challenge for top spot.  Judd will be very difficult to beat, but we will certainly push them hard!

  • An outstanding weekend of sport for the girls

Our girls entered the gruelling Knole Run at Sevenoaks for the first time ever on Saturday, and we were delighted with the team's overall sixth place out of 19 teams.  Our star performer was Amy Stockdale, who came in 19th out of a total of 155 runners.  More news and timings on our Knole Run 2012 news page.

In Netball, our girls 1st and 2nd VIIs defeated Bedstone College 55-8 and 34-2 respectively.  More details to follow.

On Sunday, eight of our LVI girls also travelled to Eton to take part in the Ladies Fives (EFA) Championships - their first Fives tournament.  They didn't win - they couldn't possibly have been expected to - but they all gained great experience from the occasion, and they played better and better as the day went by.

  • Football: House Finals

House Finals took place on the last day of term, amidst much enthusiasm and support across all the pitches.

The Grove won the 1st House final in what could be their last appearance in the competition. In a close match where neither goalkeeper was put under any real pressure The Grove snatched the winning goal from a free kick just before half time. Radbrook stepped up the pressure in the second half but The Grove's tight defence held out.

Final Score: The Grove 1, Radbrook 0.

The 2nd House final was a much more open affair with School House beating The Grove 4-0 and the Under 15 House was a very good game with Ingrams beating Severn Hill by two goals to one.

  • Rugby: OS captains Oxford to victory in the Varsity Match

OS John-Henry Carter captains Oxford to victory in the Varsity MatchOld Salopian John-Henry Carter (Rt 1994-1999) picked up more than just the Nomura Trophy when captaining Oxford University to Varsity Match success at Twickenham Stadium earlier this month.

The 30-year-old former Sale Sharks No 8 was set upon by opposite number Dave Allen during the first-half of a bruising encounter and had his left eye virtually closed by a punch.

The incident forced the psychoanalysis student to leave the field for running repairs, but he returned to play a huge part in Oxford’s biggest win over their deadly rivals from Cambridge since 1988.

The Dark Blues ran out 28-10 victors to make it two wins in a row, and the good news for Oxford fans is that Carter still has two more years to run on his course. He won his first Blue in 2009, but missed the 2010 victory after undergoing shoulder surgery.

As to his playing future, Carter was upbeat after the game – or at least before he had to go and have the blood squeezed out of the plum sized swelling beneath his eye – and looks set to carry on playing despite his advancing years and dodgy shoulders.

A Close-up of the eye!Having undergone six separate operations on the two joints he eased his way back into action in the build-up to the Varsity Match, but never held back for one moment on the big day as he gave one of the great captain’s performances in the 139 year history of the classic event.

As for his injury, and the way he received it, he was unperturbed: “It is all part and parcel of the game and there are no hard feelings. I told him that at the after-game dinner, and we had a beer together,” said Carter.
